Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the right to contest certain calls from the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
